Frieze Masters 2026_Anna Esposito: I Told You So

Looking at Anna Esposito's work today means recognising how profoundly images shape the societies we inhabit. Long before environmental responsibility, consumer culture and the dominance of mass communication became central subjects of public debate, Esposito understood that these were not separate phenomena but interconnected expressions of the same cultural system.

Working with photography, collage, assemblage and everyday industrial materials, she transformed images already circulating within society into instruments of critical inquiry. Bottle caps, packaging, plastics, fishnet stockings, zippers and found objects interrupt the photographic surface, exposing the ideological mechanisms through which images construct desire, normalise consumption and conceal violence. Rather than producing new images, Esposito interrogates those that already define everyday experience.

The works brought together in this exhibition reveal the extraordinary coherence of a practice that addresses themes which remain strikingly relevant today: environmental exploitation, ethical consumption, the commodification of living beings and the persuasive power of visual culture. Their relevance lies not in predicting the future, but in identifying the cultural structures from which many of today's most urgent questions emerged.

The title I Told You So should therefore not be understood as a gesture of triumph. It expresses the quiet awareness of an artist who recognised the contradictions of her own time long before they became impossible to ignore.

More than forty years after their creation, these works continue to offer an essential perspective on the relationship between images, society and responsibility, reaffirming Anna Esposito as one of the most original and intellectually compelling voices of post-war Italian art.
